HABITS OF THE MIND - SUMMER 2018 BOOK LIST

5/30/2018

Dear Friends,

Here is a reminder of the our new book club, Habits of the Mind. I have also added some additional information about the Summer 2018 Book List. We will read one book per month, and then we will meet once the last week of each month to discuss the book. The meeting times and locations will vary around town, but they will always be the last week of the month (except in December). The books chosen will all be Christian-oriented but will cover a variety of topics. This book club is primarily for those who live locally, but there will be opportunities for those who live afar to participate.

Ways to Participate:
  • Read the chosen book of the month.
  • Join us for live discussions at our monthly meetings in and around Fayetteville, NC. Time and locations will only be posted on either the church Facebook page or the church website.
  • Contribute to the discussion via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/AgnusDeiMinistriesLOC/
  • Check my blog for current updated information on book lists and for book reviews. https://inkandsouls.wordpress.com/habits-of-the-mind-book-club/
  • Keep checking back to my blog and our Facebook page as this group evolves as there may be more opportunities to participate in the future.

If your business (like a coffee shop or something) or church would like to host one of the meetings, please let me know.

Below, I have listed the books and some information about them for the Summer 2018 meetings. If you have any questions, please contact me!

Until next we meet,

Pastor Jessi

SUMMER 2018 BOOK LIST

Here are the books for the Summer of 2018. All of the book prices below are what I discovered online. They are all the paperback versions, except the Amazon Kindle version. I selected Amazon and Christianbook.com, because they are where I usually find the cheapest books. I included Lifeway, Barnes and Noble, and the library, because they are local places. There are many places online or brick and mortar buildings where one can buy books, including used bookstores. Prices and availability are subject to change, so do your own research before purchasing. Check back soon for the times and locations of the Summer 2018 meetings.

June 2018
Book: Forgotten God by Francis Chan
Meeting Information
          Time: 1 pm June 30, 2018
Location: The Sweet Palette in Fayetteville, NC
Possible Places To Get It:
  • Amazon Paperback – $13.59
  • Amazon Kindle – $9.79
  • www.christianbook.com – $11.99
  • LifeWay – $16.99
  • Barnes and Noble – $13.59
  • Cumberland County Library – Not available
MY NOTES: I read this over Memorial Day weekend on my Kindle. It will be a quick read for most, but Francis Chan presents some interesting information about the Holy Spirit. He offers some challenging questions and thought-provoking insights into who the Holy Spirit is and His role in our lives.

July 2018
Book: The Language of God by Francis Collins
Meeting Information
          Time: TBD
          Location: TBD
Possible Places To Get It:
  • Amazon Paperback – $10.98
  • Amazon Kindle – $12.99
  • www.christianbook.com – $10.49
  • LifeWay – Not available
  • Barnes and Noble – $12.30
  • Cumberland County Library – 1 copy available
MY NOTES: I have not yet ordered or read this book. Francis Collins is the head of the Human Genome Project. He is a scientist and a believer in God. In this book, Collins explores the importance of both faith and science, especially with regards to human existence.

August 2018
Book: The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? By F.F. Bruce
Meeting Information
          Time: TBD
          Location: TBD
Possible Places To Get It:
  • Amazon Paperback – $12.48
  • Amazon Kindle – $2.99
  • www.christianbook.com – $10.49
  • LifeWay – Not Available
  • Barnes and Noble – $12.00
  • Cumberland County Library – Not available
MY NOTES: I have read other books by F.F. Bruce during college and seminary. He is a well-respected Christian scholar. However, I have not yet read this one. I own it in paperback, and it has been on my “to-read list” for a while. The book offers an introduction to the historicity and reliability of the documents in the New Testament. It is a fairly short book, just 149 pages. I would make sure to get an edition that includes footnotes, so that you can see where his work is supported. Not all of the editions have the footnotes. Also, even though the Kindle version is the cheapest, there are apparently typos in it, according the reviews. All that to say, just do a little bit of exploration before purchasing this one!
